چکیده

The remarkable recent experiments on ensembles of magnetically trapped ultracold alkali atoms have demonstrated the transition to a highly ordered phase, that has been attributed to the process of quantum-mechanical condensation, predicted long ago (1924) by Bose and Einstein. After having presented our argument against the above attribution, we show that the known phenomenology, including a discrepancy of about one order of magnitude with the predictions of Bose-Einstein condensation, is in good agreement with the electromagnetic coherence induced on the alkali atoms by the long range electrodynamic interactions. We also predict that for temperatures lower than a well defined T BEC , the state predicted by Bose and Einstein coexists with the new coherent electrodynamic state.

Topologically trapped vortex molecules in Bose-Einstein condensates

In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of ...

Second-order coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate

The interference observed between two Bose-Einstein condensates demonstrated clearly the long-range coherence of a Bose condensate [1]. The fringe contrast is directly related to first-order coherence. Our paper [2] showed that previous measurements of the interaction energy of a condensate can be reinterpreted as a measure for second-order coherence and therefore provide direct evidence for th...

Interference Between a Large Number of Independent Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study theoretically the interference patterns produced by the overlap of an array of Bose-Einstein condensates that have no phase coherence among them. We show that density-density correlations at different quasimomenta, which play an important role in twocondensate interference, become negligible for large N , where N is the number of overlapping condensates. In order to understand the phys...

Bose-Einstein condensation into nonequilibrium States studied by condensate focusing.

We report the formation of Bose-Einstein condensates into nonequilibrium states. Our condensates are much longer than equilibrium condensates with the same number of atoms, show strong phase fluctuations, and have a dynamical evolution similar to that of quadrupole shape oscillations of regular condensates. The condensates emerge in elongated traps as the result of local thermalization when the...

Matter-wave interferometry with phase fluctuating Bose-Einstein condensates.

Elongated Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) exhibit strong spatial phase fluctuations even well below the BEC transition temperature. We demonstrate that atom interferometers using such condensates are robust against phase fluctuations; i.e., the relative phase of the split condensate is reproducible despite axial phase fluctuations. However, larger phase fluctuations limit the coherence time, e...
